This fall, African Leadership’s Refugee Ministry expanded its services to refugees in South Nashville offering programs at the Highlands Apartment’s community room. The programs are open to all those that can have access to them.

We are in great need of volunteers for the following:

Afterschool Program: This program serves refugee children in Middle School as they really struggle getting used to their new school community. Come show love and help with homework and build relationships with these youngsters and you’ll find it extremely rewarding. This program is offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays 4:00pm-6:00pm.

Kindergarten Ready Program: We are introducing a new program to help refugee families get prepared to put their young ones in school.  As most parents don’t speak English, the children have a hard time to integrate into kindergarten due to lack of understanding and meeting teachers’ expectations. Come love on these young ones as they learn their ABCs, their colors, shapes and numbers. Help as they also learn to follow command and play well with others in a setting similar to a class room. This program will be offered on Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:30am-12:00pm.

Free English Classes: This program is geared towards adults. The English classes will be offered through trained volunteers, and a leading certified ELL teacher. This program will be offered to the refugee community around South Nashville, not just the Highlands residents. This program will be offered on Wednesdays 6:30pm-7:30pm. No need to be a trained teacher. Just be fluent in English. :)

All of these programs will follow the metro school calendar in terms of closings and holidays. We ask for the volunteers to give us a once a week semester-long commitment as we highly depend on the availability of volunteers and we’ve found this to be the best way to build mature relationships with those that you’ll be serving. If interested, please fill out our volunteer contact form or just email our coordinator (aimee@africanleadershipinc.org).
